ABOUT THE BLOG:
Welcome to Nutty About Health! This is a fun, casual, food and fitness blog started in March of 2012. Most of the topics covered are food, peanut butter (I LOVE it!) and fitness, with most of the posts dedicated to yummy foods I eat.
*Please note: I do not post EVERYTHING I eat each day, nor is anything that I say meant to be taken as medical advice.
ABOUT THE BLOGGER:
Hi! My name is Karey Boerst and I’m a 30-something food and fitness enthusiast. I’ve recently made the decision to return to school to attain a Bachelor’s degree in Dietetics. I’m so passionate about food and living a healthy lifestyle since losing over 50+ lbs back in 2008 and my dream is to be able to help others realize that they CAN beat obesity and enjoy healthy, delicious food.
While I try to maintain a healthy balance 90-95% of the time, there’s that 5-10% where my Sugar Monster (my alter ego) gets loose and reaks havoc. One of my main not-so-healthy food loves is candy corn. Ok, more specifically, Brach’s Autumn Mix. LOVE it. Also topping the list are: nut butters, carrot cake, ice cream, and cupcakes. Oh, and did a mention NUT BUTTERS?! lol. I definitely have a sweet tooth.
I also enjoy so many delicious, healthy foods. I love fresh fruits and veggies with hummus, and have been slightly obsessed with baking squashes lately.
Of course I would not be the person I am today without my other (better) half who supports me whole-heartedly, 200% in everything I do – my husband, Brian. He makes me a better me. As you may wonder in the future about the lack of photos of my other half, he prefers to have his internet presence be minimal for personal and security reasons. Trust me, he does exist. ;)
Our other family members are comprised of two furry, four-legged ones. You may see them on my blog from time to time or hear them mentioned.
Mya, is our 8-year-old German Shepherd Mix and Izzy, our 10-year-old cat (who unfortunately has struggled with health issues in the past & now has no colon, thus the reason she lives in a very large cage).
I do love to be active when I am able to find the time between work, life, and school work. I believe that it’s important to get between 30-60 mins of physical activity each day, so I do try and get at least a short workout in most days. There are some days where time does not permit, or I just feel my body needs a rest day. I really enjoy aerobic style workouts and love a good, old fashioned Jillian Michaels dvd every now and then. I think it’s important to incorporate a mix of both cardio and weigh-bearing (strength) exercises into your routine. Some days I’ll just do a bit of light elliptical and/or walk my dog, Mya. Other days I’ll do attend a Zumba or kick-boxing class. I’ve found that it’s good to switch up with your workouts and keep your body guessing, plus it helps to fight off workout boredom. I just try and let my mood and body decide what kind/style workout I’m going to do each day.
One thing I’ve really been enjoying lately is cooking. I am by no means any chef. I have come a long way, but mostly just do simple recipes and like to “tinker” in the kitchen. It’s fun. I also LOVE to wander around Whole Foods or any health food store and check out the latest food finds and goodies.
Well, that’s a bit about me. I’m a bit quirky and different, but aren’t we all underneath? Feel free to contact me and I look forward to getting to know some of my readers. TTYL! :)
Loved reading your about section! I can totally relate with the mega alter-ego sweet tooth! Any tips to combat the monster?
Thank you!! Well, it is a tough monster to tame, but I have found that (at least for me) allowing myself small treats here & there actually helps, as long as I don’t eat it all at once. Having a few pieces of candy corn helped me not crave it quite so much & want to eat an entire bag the next time I had it (I have finally progressed to being able to keep it in the house, yay!). I’ve been loving those Unreal brand unjunked mini candy bars… great when you’re craving sweets & chocolate, but portion control & not as bad a choice as some others.
Other things that help me are chewing sugar free gum when I have a major sugar craving, or drinking something sweet, like a sparkling green tea… love the strawberry/kiwi diet ones… Also, sometimes just having a sliced apple or some sweet berries saves me from the sugar monster. Hope those things help you! If you find anything else that works, let me know!
Great tips and much appreciated! I actually just discovered a little trick today while at work. I typically sit all day at my desk but yesterday, I started standing up every hour or so just for a couple minutes. I did this around lunch time too and a funny thing happened- once I stood up, I was able to quickly tell when I was full. Sometimes at lunch, I like to eat a lot of different things but by just standing up, you can tell your body is full and you can avoid feeling that frumpy full feeling! Let me know if you try this tip out and it works for you!
No problem! Thanks for the standing tip! I think it does help after eating… it helps take my mind off eating more food at least & I think moving alway helps!
Great to ‘meet’ you!!! Hope dietetics is going well! I would love to study that as well
Thank you! Yes, it’s going well, although it’s a long & tough road! Worth it though!
Hey, I’d love to chat briefly. i can’t see your email, maybe you can email me? Love to ask you about food and health stuff. Thanks.
Hi, sure. My email is listed on the left side of the page, it’s karey@nuttyabouthealth.com, just FYI.
How far are you in your dietetics program? I’m 26 (have a bachelors in business already) and decided to return for a second bachelors in dietetics and I will be done in a year! I love meeting other nutrition students, especially non-traditional ones like me! Your site is great
I’m not all that far in my program… I’ve just applied officially to a Dietetics program & have been doing all of my pre-req’s & most of my science courses so far. This is my third time being in school… started with an Associates degree in Graphic Design, then went to dog grooming school, & now am back at it. Never to old to follow your dreams!
Good for you on going back to get another bachelors degree!
